FlaxFabulous accent or border plants, flax are part of the 'Phormium' family. Being from NZ, these plants are used to a harsh climate. They can be planted in full sun to part shade and are suitable in frosty or coastal conditions. They are also stunning in pots and will remain more compact than in the open garden. You can simply water once weekly when required, and feed annually with a top dressing of slow release fertiliser. If you are in a wet region, ensure planting in well drained soil or quality potting mix. These plants are unproven in sub-tropical and tropical regions - remember, they are native to New Zealand.

did you know ? New Zealand flax is not related to the common flax or linseed which is used to make fibre (linen) and linseed oil. Its strong strappy leaves were however used by the Maoris to weave baskets, nets ropes and other useful objects.
